Career Introduction

Development of Cell and Gene Therapy Drugs

Duties

  • To develop cell and gene therapy drugs using stem cell or gene-edited enhanced stem cell for fundamental treatment of incurable human diseases
  • To study mechanisms related to regeneration and anti-aging, and develop diagnosis and treatment-related technologies

Future Prospects

  • The cell and gene therapy drug market is expected to reach approximately 55.59 billion dollars by 2026 and record average annual growth rate of 49.1% from 74.9 dollars in 2021 (Evaluate Pharma, 2022)
  • Unlike conventional therapies, cell and gene therapy drugs have the innovation to fundamentally restore incurable diseases. Thus, they are expected to become a future industry with high added values.

Production and Management of Cell and Gene Therapy Drugs

Duties

  • To understand Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for production of cell and gene therapy drugs and manage all steps required for application of Investigational New Drug (IND) in Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
  • To manage the risk of contamination at each step of producing cell and gene therapy drugs and reduce losses caused by infection.
  • To enhance efficiency in cell and gene therapy drug production and contribute to patient treatment efficiency clinically.

Future Prospects

  • The cell and gene therapy drug market is expected to record average annual growth rate of 36.2% from 537.4 million dollars in 2019 to 4.68 billion dollars in 2016 (Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization, 2021)
  • The Contract Development Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) market for cell and gene therapy drugs is expected to record average annual growth rate of 31.0% and grow from 1.52 billion dollars in 2019 to 10.11 billion dollars in 2016 (Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization, 2021)

R&D on Regenerative Medicine Using Cell and Gene

Duties

  • To research and develop stem cell, organ transplant, etc., in regenerative medicine field using cell and gene.
  • To research on biological science, examine possibility of treating incurable diseases using stem cell and gene-edited enhanced stem cell, and develop new treatment methods.

Future Prospects

  • Demand for R&D on regenerative medicine using cell and gene is increasing as expectation for treating incurable diseases through regenerative medicine is continuously growing
  • The demand for professional manpower is expected to grow from 9,595 in 2022 to 22,612 in 2025, and various programs are developed and budgets are invested to foster professional manpower (Korea Health Industry Development Institute,2019)

Reproductive Medicine

Duties

  • To diagnose causes of infertility, use human reproductive cells for specialized treatment, work on in vitro fertilization and reproductive cell culture, and conduct basic research on finding mechanism of infertility.

Future Prospects

  • Since the birth of the first IVF baby in 1978, the infertility treatment market has grown to 13 billion dollars in the 2000s, and it will continue to grow in the future. Especially, the demand for professional research manpower is increasing as the infertility treatment is expanding to CHA hospitals in Korea and CHA infertility clinics in other countries.

Biotechnology Management

Duties

  • Technology management deals with strategic management to achieve the goals of corporates by using technologies.
  • It aims to enhance technology development strategies, management knowledge, and management mindset based on science technology, foster ability to establish management strategies, and build up knowledge to manage technology effectively and manage corporates successfully.

Future Prospects

  • Technology management is based on biotechnology, which is one of the key technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution. It is expected to accelerate the industrial development by enhancing the efficiency of technology innovation through introduction of principles and new technology management techniques to solve problems regarding technology development and technology application and promotion of effective technology innovation activities.
